High Quality Instruction the Transforms: A Guide to Implementing Quality Academic Service Learning

In Wisconsin, service-learning is defined as “a teaching and learn- ing method which fosters civic responsibility and links classroom learning and applied learning in communities.” They suggest the strongest service-learning experiences occur when the service is intentionally immersed in ongoing learning and is a natural part of the curricu- lum that extends into the community.

Academic service-learning can become a central focus in our schools with high quality professional development that trans- forms instructional practice. As part of a 21st century education plan, academic service-learning can help create systemic change that reduces dropout rates and narrows the achievement gap. This guide attempts to help educators understand and implement the basic principles of effective academic service-learning programs.
