High Quality Instruction the Transforms: A Guide to Implementing Quality Academic Service Learning

In Wisconsin, service-learning is defined as “a teaching and learn- ing method which fosters civic responsibility and links classroom learning and applied learning in communities.” They suggest the strongest service-learning experiences occur when the service is intentionally immersed in ongoing learning and is a natural part of the curricu- lum that extends into the community.

Academic service-learning can become a central focus in our schools with high quality professional development that trans- forms instructional practice. As part of a 21st century education plan, academic service-learning can help create systemic change that reduces dropout rates and narrows the achievement gap.
