Latest UCC Community Academic Research Links Projects Published.

UCC Community/Academic Research Links (CARL) has recently published new reports on the CARL website.  For the first time a student from the Master in Planning and Sustainable Development participated in a CARL project together with a residential group from the outskirts of Cork city. The residents wanted to address the hazardous and unsatisfactory environmental conditions in their area and the student assisted them with an analysis of planning documentation. This strengthened the group’s campaign in its efforts to make Cork County Council deliver on Policy plans for essential infrastructure.

Another project involved Bachelor of Social Work students collaborating in research with Blarney Men’s Shed. Men’s Sheds aim to help men cope with social exclusion and to promote positive mental health and wellbeing. This qualitative study explored participants’ experiences of attending the Men’s Shed in the Cork area. Its  findings have been presented in local media.

Further work is being done in collaboration with Cork Carer’s Association by a Master of Social Work student. An in-depth exploration is being conducted, documenting the experiences of seven carers in their post-caring roles. The study highlights the necessity for a social and political response in making advancements towards the alleviation of substantial challenges faced by former care workers in Irish society.
