Volunteering England Student Volunteering Week |
International, national and local volunteering: what type of volunteering is most beneficial for students and the community?
Date: Monday 14 February 2011
Time: 3pm - 5pm, followed by a drinks reception until 6pm
Location: Central London
This event launches Student Volunteering Week 2011 (taking place 21 - 27 February). Now in its tenth year, Volunteering England's Student Volunteering Week, sponsored by Santander, brings organisations from all sectors together to celebrate volunteering by students in Further and Higher Education.
2011 is a high profile year for volunteering - with not only the European Year of Volunteering and the tenth anniversary of the UN's International Year of the Volunteer (IYV+10) taking place, but also the recruitment drive and training for thousands of volunteers for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. Alongside this, the Coalition government is encouraging people to contribute to their local communities as part of their plans for the ‘Big Society'.
This leaves students with a number of options for volunteering, but which offers the most benefit for the student? This event will raise important questions about students and the community. Should students focus on volunteering abroad, which can require a substantial financial investment, or get involved with their local community in which they live? Is one ‘type' of volunteering more beneficial than another? What role does community play when students make their decision to volunteer? Should the focus of volunteering be on the students' local community or remote communities?
Join us, and a number of leading panellists, to discuss these questions and more as we launch Student Volunteering Week 2011. Places are limited so it will operate on a first come first served basis.
Cost - Free.

To book your place, please email events@volunteering.org.uk with your name, job title, organisation and any access requirements by the deadline of Friday 4th February 2011.
