Information for Education Providers on Community-based Learning

Do you work in a higher education institution? Are you keen to connect your students learning experience with the needs of civic society?

CAMPUS ENGAGE is a network for the promotion of civic engagement activities in Irish higher education, open to all higher education institutions' staff, students, community organisations and local companies in Ireland. The network aims to strengthen the relationship between higher education and the wider society, through civic engagement activities including community-based learning. Service/Community-based learning is one way you can get involved.

What is service/community based learning?
Service or community based learning is an educational tool that encourages students to learn and explore issues vital to society inside and outside the classroom and instil in students a sense of social responsibility and civic awareness. Students attain academic credit for the learning that derives from reflecting on the academic experience and ‘service’ within community. Service/community-based learning should encourage students to explore issues that are vital to society and community through a mix of methods that could include interviews, surveys and analyses, and active participation in the work of your organisation. Below is one of many existing illustrative examples of the process involved in community-based learning, designed by the Community Knowledge Initiative at the National University of Ireland, Galway.
