DIT and UCC Represent Ireland in EU Parliament Policy Briefing on Responsible Research and Innovation

EnRRICH Policy Workshop, European Parliament, January 24th 2018


The EnRRICH consortium (a H2020 project, of which University College Cork and Dublin Institute of Technology are members) held a EU research policymakers Workshop on embedding Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) in higher education curricula, January, 2018.

The event was of interest to policymakers across Europe for two main reasons:

  • It addressed key challenges for European higher education as laid out in the Renewed European Union Agenda for Higher Education (2017), namely building skills, addressing social divisions, improving capacity for innovation and integrating teaching and learning with research;
  • It developed a pipeline of engaged researchers who can better tackle grand societal challenges and sustainable development goals and contribute to the research vision of Open Innovation, Open Access, Open to the World.

EnRRICH consortium members offered brief findings from the project; hosted a discussion on issues of shared interest with international experts from research, education and engagement; and provided examples of practice from consortium partners across Europe. The event was hosted by Member of the European Parliament Lieve Wierinck, the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe and the EnRRICH consortium. Irish MEP, Sean Kelly MEP, attended the policy briefing following an invitation from Dr Ruth Hally, University College Cork (UCC) and EnRRICH project member.

In the second half of the policy workshop, attendees were allocated into 4 large groups. Dr Ruth Hally led one group, shared the experience of University College Cork (mainly the work of the UCC EnRRICH team which also includes Dr Catherine O’Mahony and Dr Kenneth Burns) in embedding Responsible Research and Innovation in the higher education curricula. Ruth gave a detailed account of UCC’s award winning Community-based Participatory Research module for cross-discipline PhD students which provides students with hands-on experience of working with a community group on a pressing societal challenge and thereby increases students’ RRI proficiency. Finally, the break-out session included some of the intuitional and national policy developments which have supported the development of RRI in the Irish curricula, including the publication of UCC’s first Civic and Community Engagement plan and the work of Campus Engage.

This document examines cross-cutting issues between higher education teaching policy and RRI and aims to stimulate discussion amongst European higher education policymakers about the value of embedding RRI in higher education curricula and developing curricula to enable students to respond to societal research needs.
